Could not create node

Hi All,

I am a newbie using pbspro.
I followed the installation from the pbspro github, until i could start pbs.
but when i try to create node using qmgr i have an error like this:
“qmgr obj=rtgps svr=default: Unauthorized Request
qmgr: Error (15007) returned from server”

I try several tutorial from this forum but still get the error.
Following the several information:

  1. cat /etc/hosts:
    127.0.0.1 localhost localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
    #10.0.1.108 rtgps
    192.168.100.9 rtgps

The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts

#::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6
#fe00::0 ip6-localnet
#ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
#ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
#ff02::2 ip6-allrouters

  1. cat /etc/pbs.conf:
    PBS_SERVER=rtgps
    PBS_START_SERVER=1
    PBS_START_SCHED=1
    PBS_START_COMM=1
    PBS_START_MOM=1
    PBS_EXEC=/opt/pbs
    PBS_HOME=/var/spool/pbs
    PBS_CORE_LIMIT=unlimited
    PBS_SCP=/usr/bin/scp

I am connecting to internet using wifi.

It would be great if you can give me your comments about the issue.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

Please check this discussion

Dear Adarsh,

Actually i install PBS only on one cpu, and i will use that for my processing.
I am already check in that discussion but in which part that solve my problem.

Regards

susilo

Note:
1, static IP and hostname resolution (reverse lookup) is important.
2 192.168.100.9 rtgps should be the first line in the /etc/hosts
3. Make sure that /etc/nsswitch.conf has “files” first for the hosts map
4. selinux disabled and system rebooted
5. firewall disabled ( or allow ports 15001 - 15009 and 17001 )

Please share the output of the below commands:

  1. hostname
  2. cat /etc/hosts
    3, pbs_hostn -v hostname
  3. ping -c 5 hostname
  4. ifconfig

Please refer the PBS Pro admin guide https://www.altair.com/pdfs/pbsworks/PBS19.2.3_BigBook.pdf on the below section

8.5.1.1 Events Logged at Event Class 128 (0x0080)

Please try creating the node using qmgr , it will log messages in the $PBS_HOME/server_logs/YYYYMMDD

Please share the server_logs , it will lead us to the issue.

Dear Adarsh

Before I try your command, just give you information after several repeat install PBSpro and run command below;

  1. pbsnodes -a
    rtgps
    Mom = rtgps
    ntype = PBS
    state = free
    pcpus = 16
    resources_available.arch = linux
    resources_available.host = rtgps
    resources_available.mem = 32844728kb
    resources_available.ncpus = 16
    resources_available.vnode = rtgps
    resources_assigned.accelerator_memory = 0kb
    resources_assigned.hbmem = 0kb
    resources_assigned.mem = 0kb
    resources_assigned.naccelerators = 0
    resources_assigned.ncpus = 0
    resources_assigned.vmem = 0kb
    resv_enable = True
    sharing = default_shared
    last_state_change_time = Sun May 24 14:03:51 2020
    last_used_time = Sun May 24 00:32:21 2020

  2. qmgr -c “p s”

Create queues and set their attributes.

Create and define queue workq

create queue workq
set queue workq queue_type = Execution
set queue workq enabled = True
set queue workq started = True

Set server attributes.

set server scheduling = True
set server default_queue = workq
set server log_events = 511
set server mail_from = adm
set server query_other_jobs = True
set server resources_default.ncpus = 1
set server default_chunk.ncpus = 1
set server scheduler_iteration = 600
set server resv_enable = True
set server node_fail_requeue = 310
set server max_array_size = 10000
set server pbs_license_min = 0
set server pbs_license_max = 2147483647
set server pbs_license_linger_time = 31536000
set server eligible_time_enable = False
set server max_concurrent_provision = 5
set server max_job_sequence_id = 9999999

  1. qstat -B
    Server Max Tot Que Run Hld Wat Trn Ext Status

rtgps 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 Active

From the 3 command above, its show that pbspro successfully installed?

Now I run command from you:

  1. rtgps{rtgps}646: hostname

Hope there are any sugesstion from you, many thanks.

Thank you @susilo for sharing these details. Much helpful

  1. You already have a node added to the the PBS Pro server ( pbsnodes -av or pbsnodes -aSj to check)
  2. You have a workq which is the default queue and all the server configuration attributes are intact

Everything looks good to me, if you can test the below commands and share us the output that would be helpful

as root user:
 pbs_hostn -v  rtgps

As a non-root user on the system:
qsub -- /bin/sleep 1000
qstat -answ1

Thank you @adarsh, here the output of the command:

(as root)
rtgps rtgps # pbs_hostn -v rtgps
primary name: rtgps (from gethostbyname())
aliases: rtgps.home
address length: 4 bytes
address: 192.168.100.9 (157591744 dec) name: rtgps

(non-root):
rtgps.home{rtgps}640: qsub – /bin/sleep 1000
1004.rtgps
rtgps.home{rtgps}641: qstat -answ1

@adarsh could you please give me simple example if i want to run an simple.csh script using my default configuration.

Thank you

Nice one !

The first line of your script should be #!/bin/sh and chmod +x simple.csh ; qsub simple.csh

 Sample script:
      cat myscript.sh
      #!/bin/sh
      #PBS -N MyHelloJob
      print "Hello"

chmod +x myscript.sh
qsub myscript.sh

You can check man pages for qsub for more information.

@adarsh thank you very much for your assistance,
I try with my script and running well.
Btw is there any trick to speed up a processing ? I have 16 CPU with 32GB memory.

It all depends whether your application(serial or parallel) or the problem you are solving can ulitlise multiple cores and maximum amount of memory to speed up time to results (scalability of your application). If does help , then you can submit the job as below requesting more resources in terms of cores and memory

qsub -l select=1:ncpus=12:mem=20gb simple.csh
